Kids, Community & Big Smiles at the 2026 Mineral Lake Fishing Derby

Some of the best moments from the 2026 Mineral Lake Fishing Derby 2026 didn’t happen out on the lake.

They happened around a fish pond full of excited kids, tangled fishing lines, proud grandparents, patient parents, volunteers cheering everybody on, and little ones peeking through the viewing windows hoping to spot a fish swimming by.

For a few hours Saturday morning, the Kids Fish Pond became one of the happiest little corners of derby weekend. Kids of all ages lined up around the tanks waiting for that exciting tug on the line — some completely fearless, others a little unsure, and a few who were honestly more interested in watching the fish through the underwater windows or playing catch with our Lions mascot while waiting their turn. 😄

And honestly… that’s what made it so special.

This wasn’t just about fishing.

It was about families slowing down for a minute.
It was about grandparents teaching grandkids something they probably learned themselves years ago.
It was about parents helping steady little fishing poles.
It was about volunteers taking time to encourage nervous young anglers.
It was about community.

You could see it everywhere.

Little hands gripping fishing poles twice their size. Grandparents kneeling down to help bait hooks. Dads proudly watching their kids reel in fish. Tiny smiles from kids holding up their prize trout like they had just landed the catch of a lifetime.

Some kids squealed when the fish splashed.
Some got laser focused.
Some wanted to touch the fish immediately.
Others just wanted to stare through the tank windows in amazement.

And every single reaction was perfect.

One of the most meaningful parts of the event came during the final hour, which was reserved for our local Special Olympics group. Watching the joy, encouragement, patience, and excitement during that time was something really special, and we’re proud to continue creating space where everyone can be part of the fun.

The Kids Fish Pond itself was also a wonderful example of what community partnerships can accomplish. Visitors may have noticed both the Mineral Lake Lions Club and Puyallup Tribe of Indians logos displayed on the pond. We are incredibly grateful for the partnership and support that helped make this experience possible for so many children and families during derby weekend.

Events like this don’t happen without volunteers, sponsors, organizations working together, and people willing to spend long hours creating moments for others. From staffing the pond and untangling lines to helping kids hold fish for photos and simply sharing encouragement, every little piece matters.

And judging by the smiles we saw all morning long… it was absolutely worth it.

At the end of the day, the derby is about more than prizes or who caught the biggest fish. It’s about bringing people together and creating the kinds of memories small towns are built on.

The kind where a little girl kneels beside a tank window completely fascinated by what’s swimming below the surface.
The kind where fathers helps tiny hands reel in a fish.
The kind where families laugh together and strangers become neighbors.
